J2EE Verifier and AVK
Hani’s “latest harpoon victim”:http://www.freeroller.net/comments/fate?anchor=j2ee_verifier_and_avk_cruel is the hapless J2EE verifier and the Application Verification Kit.
Now I could say a lot about both, but it’s going to be busy day so I’ll try to keep it brief.
Firstly, the cost is ridiculous. $US100k to get “my application”:http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira “J2EE verified”? Surely I would be better served hiring two sales people to calmly convince my customers that we didn’t need to pass the test in the first place?
OK – now assume I wanted to plonk down the 100gs – what does Sun do? Basically nothing. To do this, _you_ run all the tests and Sun just reads the results and confirms that they “look OK”. If only we could all make that kind of easy money.
Now – can you define a J2EE application? No need! The irony is this ladies and gentlemen – Sun has done this for you and it’s going to be a rude shock if you haven’t read the fine print. Your application _will not_ be verified unless you use JSPs and EJBs and a bunch of other technologies.
Does that mean an EJB application with Velocity views is a J2EE application? What about a JSP/Struts/Hibernate based app? Nope – Sun has spoken and you will not get verified with those technologies.
Lastly, passing is a joke. Your application needs to pass 80% of the tests.
This is not a high school examination folks, this is a _verification kit_. However Sun seems to think that if you have the cash and and your application mostly works, you can get verified.
Imagine telling your customers that your application is “80%” J2EE compatible. How about – “80% of my application will run in a J2EE server”?
Insanity – all of it.
